Q. Please tell us a bit about your artwork/design in the exhibition, what was the inspiration behind your work?

A. ‘Intrusion’ is inspired from a photo collage that I made from a collection of photographs found in a flea market in London. It is about nostalgia wearing a distinctly utopian face. Using paint to create figurative reconstructions of imagery, I am covering themes that relate to our distorted memories of a nostalgic past.

Q. How did you develop your process?

A. My practice emerges from the fascination of found photography. I have a huge on going collection of photographs that I find in flea markets and antique shops across England. I am drawn to the ambiguity of the people in the photos, each begging a fiction, which will become a painting.

My work addresses ideas of time and the diminishing realties of existence. Each of my paintings reincarnate past experience, memories that have been lost and forgotten. By reconstructing images through painting, I want the familiar to seem unfamiliar. I want to attempt to trigger a feeling of memory within the viewer by using old evocative imagery to cross the boundary between nostalgia and the anticipation of the unknown. The paintings become strange fictions that blur the boundary between document and storytelling.

Q. Which artists do you admire and why?

A. I am a huge fan of Peter Doig’s work. It is completely absorbing and dream-like. I have also recently become really interested in the work of Adam Dix who was also a student at Wimbledon College of Art and Justin Mortimer.

Q. What are you currently working on, or what is next?

I am currently working on some site-specific work for an exhibition coming up in November at the Crypt, St Pancras. The exhibition is called ‘Who Will Provide’. Due to the nature of the space, I am trying something completely different on wood with resin and paint. It’s putting me completely out of my comfort zone, which is exciting!

Q. How does it feel to be selected for MiAL Collection 2018, what’s been the highlight?

A. I am very happy to be selected for MIAL Collection 2018. It was a highlight to be a part of their exhibition at the TM Lighting Gallery and I’m excited to see what other opportunities lay ahead.

Please list any awards that you have either won or have been/are currently shortlisted for.
