Poet of the People
George Triggs: Sculpture of Benjamin Zephaniah
Co-curated by Ruth Millington and Hannah Payne
Poet of the People presents the first public exhibition of British figurative sculptor George Triggs’ monumental portrait of Benjamin Zephaniah, celebrating the life, legacy and influence of one of Britain’s most distinctive cultural voices. Created in dialogue with members of the Zephaniah family, the sculpture explores portraiture, public memory and cultural legacy. Poetry and film place Benjamin’s own voice at the heart of the exhibition, with his words woven into the sculpture and presented throughout the gallery alongside a newly commissioned short film documenting the creation of the work.
Conceived at over four-times life size, the monumental work explores portraiture as a vessel for presence, memory and cultural legacy, reflecting on Zephaniah’s enduring impact as one of Britain’s most vital public voices.
