Heiress: Sargent’s American Portraits at Kenwood House in Hampstead.
The exhibition Heiress at Kenwood House sheds new light on John Singer Sargent’s American sitters—women often misunderstood in their time. As curator Wendy Monkhouse notes, the show explores “the real lives of the women behind the works,” revealing their lasting contributions to politics, the arts, and society beyond the usual “cash for coronets” narrative.
The exhibition presented unique lighting challenges in the historic setting with the usual challenges of glare, while creating an even wash of light.
TM Lighting created a bespoke solution, adapting its ZeroFortySurface—originally designed for high-quality lighting in homes, hotels, and private collections—to mount on existing picture rails. Compact yet powerful, the ZeroFortySurface delivers consistent, uniform lighting that highlights fine details without distraction.
For the tallest portraits, the TM MasterLight Classic provided precision illumination. This patented mini LED picture light handles canvases up to four metres high, with sublime glare control, high colour rendering (CRI 97+), and an elegant, minimal profile. Together, the lighting scheme brings clarity and drama to Sargent’s work—honouring the women at its heart.
