Celebrating International Women’s Day, The Future is Female aims to spotlight the exceptional talents of female sculptors, both established and emerging, while confronting the persistent gender gap in the arts. With 18 female sculptors showcasing 40 artworks, the exhibition offers a diverse exploration of contemporary female sculpture.
Despite strides in acknowledging women’s underrepresentation in the art world, a 2022 study found that only 7% of art displayed in UK national museums is by female artists, with sculpture being notably male-dominated. Though perceptions of women int the arts have evolved, recognition for female sculptors remains limited, with few breaking into top auction sales.
The Future is Female endeavors to address this imbalance, providing a platform for female sculptors. Through a collective female gaze, the exhibition invites viewers to engage with sculpture, showcasing diverse voices within contemporary female sculptural art. With a myriad of visions and viewpoints, the showcased artists contribute to a comprehensive understanding of art, culture, environment, and society today.
