Henry Skerritt, Art historian and senior curator of Kluge Ruhe Collection at the University of Virginia,USA writes. “Gibson’s works are not simply unmediated depictions of country, but integrated and resolved extensions of cultural knowledge.”
Danie Mellor 9b. 1971, Queensland, Australia)
Danie Mellor is today one of Australia’s most celebrated artists. Born in Mackay, Queensland in 1971, his Aboriginal family were from the rainforests of Northern Queensland, and his father’s family emigrated from California, coming to Australia in the early 1900s. Mellor has lived in Australia, Scotland, South Africa and England and currently lives and works in Bowral, New South Wales. His twenty first century works unravel connections between his familial cultures and the secrets inherent in Australian history.
In the catalogue to his 10-year survey exhibition Danie Mellor: Exotic Lies Sacred Ties atThe University of Queensland Art Museum in 2014, Dr Cambell Gray writes: “Danie Mellor’s work is at once beautiful and a calling to account. Finely crafted, embellished and framed, with images and devices that disarm with humour, narrative and a play on the ‘exotic’, the work nonetheless confronts and confounds our understanding of the past. Mellor tells stories that are neither simple nor complete. Instead, the view is presented with multiple layers that challenge assumptions. Stories collide and metaphors reach further than expected.”
A Private View of ‘Satellite’ will take place at TM Lighting Gallery from 6.30pm – 8.30pm Wednesday 13th February 2019. This exhibition at TM Lighting Gallery is in association with
